Youtube has been talking about this for 2 - 3 years - that I know of anyway. Youtube is getting ready to go into the video rental market. Where they are going to compete against companies like netflix. When a movie is released on DVD, you can log into youtube and rent it for a couple of dollars. Have you heard of the Red Box video rental box? It rents videos for $1. I suspect that youtube is going to price their video rentals so that people can justify not having to go to Red Box to get the DVD. With cable TV companies and netflix offering video on demand, youtube/google would have to be crazy to pass this up. If they have the ability to offer video on demand, and they can make money, then go for it.
This could be very interesting... on one hand - it could revolutionize the online video industry... on the other hand, it could crush YouTube... then again, it may not change a thing.
Their readying themselves for the the launch of Google TV. Having this up and running before the release of GTV is a great strategy. Cheers James
They must have one heck of a bandwidth bill for all those videos at youtube. I have a feeling they make quite a bit of money though too. Many sites have been talking about charging lately, but still haven't seen it happen yet. Guess it would depend on how bad you want to watch a particular video. On the other hand if one did pay, and it really wasn't what you were looking for or not that good it would be a bummer.
Hello, YouTube Rental is a beta version. Currently, the YouTube Rentals Beta service is available only to the content owners in the US. Check this post for more information - http://youtubeking10.blogspot.com/2010/10/youtube-rentals-beta-how-to-become.html
I am sure Youtube is looking at Facebook and wondering how to monetize, but I don't think they will, since Google owns them, and Google doesn't want to appear t be money hungry, it is making plenty from Adwords alone
I don't think this is bad idea for YouTube. At least they're not charging just to watch any video, only full movies.
Video marketing is one of the best forms of advertising today - if they do that it could kill it for all internet marketers that use this stragegy - not good!
