Your Web Directory Description?

One simple question about the description you use when filling out a form for a web directory.

Do you use the exact same description each and every time? (My current method BTW)
    SEMrush
    OR

Do you change it to something different each time, (or for every fifth form you fill in change it to something slightly different)?

I only ask this because someone mentioned something about google not liking repeating content. So surely if you had the same description all of the time in a number of web directories google would ignore it after a while and not count it, thus devaluing web directories.

Am I missing something here

The description is put on the directories site and if you use the same one over and over and make it duplicate content then its the directory owner who would take a hit, never the site who it belongs to.

For my descriptions I always use the same one and never include any major keywords. Why would you want a directory competing against you for your keywords?

Using the same anchor text and description for every submission is not a great thing todo. I always vary the descriptions of my submissions to directories and use different text links all the time.

Also try deeplinking into your website, try making your inbound links as natural as possible.

Yeh that's what I was begining to think - Anchor text is the most important thing with this.

Using keyords that relate to your website in the anchor text on a web directory would help your site, more than the description. But it also looks like it would'nt hurt to change the description text now and again.

Description is not usefull for anything SEO wise. It is only usefull to try to attract traffic, getting people to click on the link.

You are right to be confused. Google will certainly hold a dim light on repetition, so get into a good directory, or at least one with potential. The Orange Pages (A blatant plug) is the one example, unlike the other squillions of wannabes, TOP have been around for years, they don't use baby scripts that look pretty but lack content, this directory has probably the second largest content available. They lack massively in categories, but they build as you submit so this can't be bad. All directories are good to get in, but its the ones that the big guys like that count.

The general concensus is that directories are no longer of use, but hey, remember what they said about Starsky and Hutch hairstyles and clothes? They are all back in fashion and that will be the same as Directories. The key IMHO is to get into one that has REAL potential and has been around with the rest for years, these are survivors, not the ones popping up like zits on a teenagers face! They'll come and go.

i use about 3 different descriptions and anchor tags. the anchor tags are more important of course. anyway it won't ever devalue your site if you used the same description and anchor!!

I think that outlines the wrong use of a directory.

A directory is actually suppose to be a place where a person can find a website by looking at specific categories, or searching the directory for keywords. If you make a poor description, with no keywords, then you are being counterproductive for yourself.

Sure, a directory is an easy way to get a backlink, and if that is all you are looking for then, you are not taking advantage of what the directory could actually do for you. ie...send real targeted visitors that came to the directory and found your site by searching it for keywords or an appealing description.
