I reckon I am 99.9% correct but for a major project I need to be 100%!

When using Googles keyword tool you will get your "keyword" and global/local searches but what I need to know is - When I get my list of search volumes, does the break it down from the main keyword ?

I would have thought each word/phase is its own volume?

I think it is break down from the main thing. No one will search a single "holiday" in google. Always it will be associated with some other words.

I think it displays unuiqe volumes for each query listed... To be 100% sure check the adwords help archive... Apparently, it's the only training you get if you go to work for Google in this department so by that reckoning it should be quite in depth...

Hope you find your answer and if you do find it (with evidence) be sure to post it on here...

You need to set it to exact match, not broad.
Broad match is an ad words term for an ad words tool. It's telling an adwords advertiser what sort of search volumes would be acheived by that keyword set to broad match, when it will be triggered by synonyms and related terms
