I agree. Forums are great and most of the time, links you exchange are relevant.

Most forums actually suck for trying to get decent link exchanges. Sometimes I post link exchaneg request in other forums and get either A) no responses or B) a dozen "I'll give you a link on my [insert PR here] links page in exchange for a link on your homepage" type offers.

There are a ton of webmasters here with quality sites who "get it".

Why not try finding sites that aren't going to bury you in a links page??? why are we all focusing on sites that are going to put you on their links pages. I never do link pages unless the site is truly high traffic. I am pretty much always a site wide kind of guy... and I think all marketers should be in that mindset, go for the gold, and if you can't get it no matter what you do, then maybe you settle, but most of the time, you can negotiate your way into the gold... if you know what you're doing and you are a smooth talker.

I try to focus on quality, rather than quantity. Find the top ranking sites for the keyword you are targeting and try to work out a link exchange with them. I have sites that have obtained PR5 and more importantly, top rankings with as few as 10 external backlinks.

If you want PR, pay attention to the amount of links the link page you are exchanging with has. I've seen some PR5 and PR6 site that have more than a thousand links and they will pass hardly any PR. PR is divided among the amount of outgoing links on a page- so the fewer the better.

I am noticing more and more sites which use link management programs are having their link pages reduced to PR0 - primarly with sites that seem to have hundreds of link exchanges.

I'm also seeing a lot of directories having their PR reduced to zero- sometimes it is only their inner pages while the homepage is left alone.

Some links may not be good for passing pr, but a link on some sites is good for refering traffic.

I try to focus on the quality or potential of the site. You can usually tell how serious a new site is about building a quality site. I get tons of requests to exchange a PR4 or PR5 link with a brand new sites. Most of these sites are junk, but sometimes (although rarely) I will do it. About six months ago I gave a link to a new site that I could tell was serious about the site. The PR0 return link from them is now a PR6 link.

One of the biggest mistakes new site owners make imo, is exchanging links with too many low quality and PR0 sites. Since many "better" websites require you have a PR"X" or higher rank before they will do an exchange, new sites do these low quality exchanges which wind up hurting them in the long run. You wind up with links from spammy or non-relevant sites diluting the quality of your future exchanges. I've found that getting a few "better" links and waiting until the next PR update will help you in the long run.

I just found this tool, Backlink Builder, to find related sites that offer link exchange. So you type some keywords and it will find related sites that have 'link to us', 'add url', 'submit url' links and you can visit and submit one by one. I just used it for my new site and it really saves time.

Disclaimer: I'm NOT the owner/affiliated to them!!

    Battra:

Find theme related websites that offer reciprocal links with
    any search engine:

    http://yahoo.com

Your search inquiry should look like this:

"Submit a link" + "Your keyword goes here"

So a request for websites based on the keyword phrase
"link building" would look like this:

"Submit a link" + "link building"

Be sure to include the quotes.

You can use other phrases instead of "submit your link" including:

    "add your site"
    "submit a url"
    "add a url"
    "add a link"

Searching Google as well as MSN will give you a different
    set of results.

This is a sound technique to use for niche or mini sites, because
it can be very hard to get search engine traffic for a mini site.

Add the link to your site first, then invite the reciprocal link.

I try to follow a strategy of only linking to websites that
would bring added value to my own website visitors.
Don't get hung up on PR. High quality sites with no PR will
probably develop a high PR over time.

    Best of success,

    Robert

Link Vault is my recommendation (see link in sig).

Plus contacting sites in the search results you are targeting.
