Your Thoughts on Exit Popups?

I did a search but didn't find any real discussions about this.
What do you think about exit popups (javascript windows that automatically appear on exit).

You can see it on alot of eBook sales letter landing pages. An example is this site: http://www.ispeedboost.com/ (not that it's like any typical sales landing page tho).

Do you think it helps sales or just gives the user a bad impression, for normal landing pages like ringtones, dating, those kind?
What type of sites do you think it works best on?

In general people hate exit popups. It was tolerated more in the late 90's and early 2000's but not much anymore. I'd recommend against it.

I think exit pop-ups are GREAT! After all, the customer is leaving your website without making a purchase... you might as well give it a 2nd chance to get something of value (money or an e-mail address).

After all, who cares if they get offended by a pop-up... they were leaving your site anyways :D

They could come back though. :) Studies have shown that a lot of people won't come back if the site has exit popups.

I think most people hate anything that popups or popunders as it's getting in the way of their normal browsing.

Hmm, that's why I'm still a little on the fence here.
If you check out that URL I posted above, it isn't really those kind of pop-up/under windows.
It's more like a javascript loader, and I think most popup blockers wont be able to block it. But whatever...
Guess I have to use my own instincts here.

I personally think that kind of popup on the sample site you posted is just fine.

I'd want the end user to buy right then and there, or at least sign up for the newsletter, or show them a special discount if they're leaving, because chances are if they ARE leaving, they ain't coming back any time soon, if at all, so get 'em while you can.

Does anybody actually know how to create an effective exit popup?

I'd like to give these a shot, but I can't find anything that works with IE7 and Firefox 2

Popups are against the TOS for Azoogle.

How interesting...You're right...What's funny about this is that my AM suggested using them for a campaign of mine today.

I just checked the terms, and you're right, pop-ups are prohibited with Azoogle

but, part of me wonders how much those rules are actually enforced...because right above the pop-up rule is this:

It would be interesting to see what % of Azoogle revenue is generated from websites that break the above rules, lol

I'm going to ask my AM to clarify the pop-up rule tomorrow

It's been my experience with my affiliate websites (the ones that aren't membership or information sites) that hardly anyone ever comes back a 2nd time.

My Google Analytics for the affiliate sites show that about 98% of the visitors are one time. That's why many experts say that when it's feasible, get their e-mail address on the first time... because if they don't make a purchase, you will NEVER see them again (or their money :) )

So regardless of using an exit pop-up or using no pop-up, they're not coming back anyways. Why...? Because they're bastards

Just kidding y'all! Learn to love your customers and they'll love you back!

Like, 99 out of 100 people build websites around affiliate offers in order to make money....

I mean, we didn't get in this business to spend money on PPC and spend our valuable time making websites/doing SEO out of the kindness of our hearts, to provide the world with useful content :)

Maybe we should all just keep promoting our site... and allow Azoogle to keep our checks...

The popunders on exit have proven to be very effective. In fact, 2 very successful marketers that I know claim that it has increased their list by something like 65%.
