"Your Sitemap exceeds the maximum file size limit."

    Hey everyone,

just got a little question. Today, Google failed to download my sitemap, and gave the following error:

"Your Sitemap exceeds the maximum file size limit. Please create multiple Sitemaps containing fewer URLs to meet the file size limit.".

I use Wordpress for my Website, and I have the Plugin: "XML Sitemap Generator for WordPress".

so I was wondering, how do I go about fixing/reducing the file size so Google can continue to download my sitemap?

    Thanks,

    1. make your sitemap only have the urls of your site (no dates, priorities, etc)
    or
    2. split your links into multiple sitemaps.

Try to google XML sitemap plugin. I believe you can find the information you’re looking for.

I think there are options in that plugin where you can tick the options you want and don't want in order to reduce the file size.

Um, you need a login to be able to access the admin panel. Robots can't index it.

Dismatikz, how about posting a link to the sitemap in question please?

yes, I think you can use Google XML Sitemap plugin. I heard it is better than XML Sitemap Generator. CMIIW

AutoMapIt.com uses "concise sitemaps" meaning that it leaves out 'default' information for LastMod (if your site doesn't offer this info), changefrequency (unless you specify it for a particular URL), and priority (except on truly outstanding pages). The rest of that information typically becomes repetitive and takes up a lot of space on larger sites, or sites with looooong URLs. It also helps by spidering beyond your WordPress blog to pick up other valuable pages on your site (if you build beyond just Wordpress).

The result is that you can easily fit your 1200 URLs and WAY MORE into a sitemap without breaking the 10MB limit for sitemaps.
