How many of you have "Home" as the 1st link (most important backlink) on your webpages? I don't because I'm not selling homes/houses. It is a known fact that "First Link Priority states that the first link that the spiders read when they visit a web page is given the most link authority". Note: Not my article. I think it is one of the best about "first link priority". Many site owners are ignorant about this and their internal site structures are giving bad rankings. One of my websites is on page 1 for the keyword of "digital products" which is highly competitive keyword (441,000 for allintitle:digital products) because the 1st links are mostly "Digital Products" not "Home". Good ranking = good net traffic = good money. Your comments please. Thanks.
"I don't because I'm not selling homes/houses" Made me chuckle. You're right though, especially for larger sites with thousands of pages, changing the 'home' link can make a big difference. Of course it has to be weighed up usability and what the typical visitor expects to see.
Ummm....Does it really matter? Home is just a pointer to your homepage. You would think search engines would be smarter than that and would know that.
Yea dude it matters. It's still a keyword. IMO don't add a link to your home page. Instead using an image. And use the alt tag instead. Most people don't look for "Home" any ways. They just click on your logo.
This is an interesting theory -- I've never heard of this "first link gets the most authority" thing. Although somewhat skeptical of its validity, I know that anchor text is important, so it's still a good practice to use the most desirable keyword as the anchor text when using backlinks to index a new site for the first time.
Very interesting to observe that some are still in favor of making "Home" as your 1st link. I guess if you are not going after highly competitive keywords and your biz on the Net is part-time, "first link priority" is not important. I'm waiting for the seniors' views.
But you have to balance it with usability. As webmasters we know we can click on the logo and it will take us to the index page. But not everyone knows that. Do you really want it so people on your site can't work out how to get to the homepage? Whats the point in increasing your ranking by a puny amount, only to lose visitors who leave because your site has low usability? Its a convention on the web to have a link to your homepage, and sticking to conventions increases usability. If you were such a pro you wouldn't be scraping round for extra seo.
