    I'm married, so this is only a guess, but I suspect it is a supply and demand thing, part of which involves logistics. There can be a surplus of oil around the world, but if it is not getting to your locale efficiently and in abundant quantities, you will pay more at the pump. My other guess would be that some of it comes from trying to avoid the inevitable baggage that comes with the enthusiastic amateur. :)
