So, I've found a few royalty free stock image sites... and they left me quite underwhelmed. I'm wondering, a) are there any good ones out there? and b) what are they?! :)

Looking forward to finding a good one! Thanks!

I use sxc.hu but there is no guarantee the images are royalty free although
it is supposedly one of the better free stock image site I use. You may require to credit the owners or ask them first though but its uploaded by others so I can't really tell whether its safe to use if but feel free to give it a glance if you will.

iStockphoto is a good site. You can buy credits per image, at a reasonable price. Haven't found any good "free" ones yet but still looking.....

I always use to use Google, but you never know if the images are copyright. So its safe to find a site thats 100%free for commercial and personal use.

Yes you can check those with going to Google Images Search-Advanced Seacrh-Choose different Usage rights and there you go.

Google images is probably not always the best due to copyright violation concerns. I agree with earlier posters that http://www.sxc.hu/ is a good place to start looking.

That being said (and I know we're all trying to save as much money as possible), I try to pay for my stock photos on most of my bigger business ventures for 2 reasons:
    1. You're more likely to have a unique image this way.
    2. I think it's pretty cool that people make their living taking photos, and I like to support specific stock photographers whom I personally like. So whenever I'm in a position to do so, I try to spend a few dollars (but just a few).

If I'm just throwing up a site quickly, I use free stuff. But if I'm counting on thousands of visitors per day, I'll be more inclined to go for higher quality.

Search on Google: "Public domain pictures" - you will find some. Free for personal and commercial.
