Your experience with the new Google referrals

Discussion in 'AdSense' started by footballboy, Jul 3, 2007.

I was quite excited when I saw Google referrals appear in my Adsense account, but my enthusiasm was quite shortlived.

    - You are not allowed to make any custom butttons, the code just looks like a normal text add.

    - The payout is tiny, in most cases it is even less than that what I get per click.

For now I have stayed clear of the referrals, what is your experience so far?

My experience tells me that the referrals come in really slow, but the payout is between 1 and 2 bucks normally. Mind you, my sites are not structured to promote the referrals. I have seen many people with good success stories with referrals who actually promote and build around them.

    footballboy i feel the same.

Most of the stuff was "weight loss pills" which isnt what I want to sell. At the moment the selection of what to advertise is "piss poor" to say the least. Will have to wait a while for it to grow in interest for advertisers.

I think referrals can do well on certian types of sites more than others. I don't think they will do well on football sites.

I agree that you need to have targetted traffic for referrals.
What I meant was that you need to have conversion rate of between 30%-50% for most of these referrals to earn you the same money as simple text adds.

I think they might do better if the advertisers design creative banners for their products, otherwise they look the same as regular ads, except they say "Referral Ads by Google."

Google referral ads are quite new to many people - as many new publishers are able to use the referrals. However, as stated, the quality of referrals available is not the best.

From what I can see it would be best optimized if the site was niche and maybe 15 relevant referrals were put in the rotation. At the minute I am trying category based - but even some of the referrals are in totally the wrong category. No joy from any referral yet, but I do plan to work with it a bit and look at customising for specific sites.

The one problem I did notice is under the payment options - it lists in different currencies... perhaps a feature google can improve to convert payment options into USD so that more comparison can be made.

Some of the referral option payments are:

    Action Payment
    Lead $1.15
    Sale €9.62
    Sale €7.69
    Signup $0.38
Signup $11.54 (though it looks like that would be the sale and not signup)
    Registration £1.54
Not sure Y30.77 (it was in foreign letters - just giving some examples)
    Purchase/Sale $19.23
    registration €0.08
    Purchase/Sale $18.46
    Lead $23.08
    Lead £32.31
    --------------

I just went through and chose some at random. As you can see, multiple currencies, varying prices for different actions - just like normal cost per action model. The biggest problem is having the right CPA advert targeted to the right crowd... so many of the ads will not bring any benefits if they are not targeted to your visitors needs/wants etc.

In the long term, the referrals offer a much more secure foothold for publishers as payment is made after an action has been taken... in many cases a sale. This should benefit publishers in the long term, although it may require tweaks to site setup as well as becoming more focussed on a niche.

In addition to this, nobody can predict what new referrals will become available in the future for your niche - and therefore it cannot be dismissed at this stage. If you don't try anything and are currently not satisfied with results, then the chances of any dramatic improvements are extremely low.

As long as you try things within the terms and conditions, then it may help you improve your overall income.

When I first looked at the list, I thought the same thing - it was all weight loss stuff and nothing that I could promote.

But when I played around with it and entered my keyword, it gave me stuff that was completely targetted to my niche. Based on that, I am going to give it a try.

If you don't see referrals 2.0 right away, please check back in a few days, as the feature will gradually become available in all accounts over the next few weeks

Google states it might take up to a few weeks for it to show up
