Just wanted to share a close call I had yesterday regarding my directory and hopefully help someone else who might make the same error as I did. I had to go out of town for a few days on business, while I was away, I was unable to access my directory to check up on things. Seemed a little strange, but I thought perhaps it was just a server problem. After returning, I noticed my site was still down. After some checking, I found that my domain name had expired. I guess you can well imagine the panic that was starting to set in at that time. This would be a disaster for sure. Anyway, to make a long story short. I was able to get back my domain and everything is back to normal again. What ever you do, don't forget the details. There is so much more to running a directory than just reviews, approvals, and editing. Don't let this happen to you. Check your domains!
I would have honestly donated something towards your renewal had it went past the 18 day grace period. (it costs $90 to get it back) I know you take care of your directory and would definitely not ever want to see it go away. I'm glad you managed to straighten things out. My only suggestion if to change your email for your domain notifications only, so this way, you will not miss the 90/60/30 day expiring notifications you get. make it some obscure account that spammers wont get nor hit, like; Rob
Thanks for the info! But didn't your registrar send you an email about the expiration of your domain?
Thanks Rob, The sad fact is, I actually received the warnings and I just got so wrapped around some changes I'm planning this year that I actually let that detail for later. Never again. Can you imagine if someone had been able to snatch it up? Wow.. ! Still makes me take a deep breath..
So pleased to hear you got it sorted out it has happened to us in the past But we know you care so keep on doing the good job you are doing on your directory
Or you could get a host that auto renews them unless you say dont do that 1and1 do it might not be the cheapest but at least your never have that feeling of its all gone pete tong
Glad you got it sorted. Strange but I was only just looking at my registration documents a couple of days ago and I had the very same thought... Won't let that happen
Nice directory, I've added it to my 're-visit' list. You were lucky, that's a desireable domain you have there.
Glad to see you got it back as well, this is a good reason why one should register their domain for at least 5 or 10 years ahead.
Glad everything worked out for you Rod. I'd hate to see someone snatch up your domain after all of the work and time you've invested.
good to see you got it back but come on your domain should never of had the chance to expire i renew all mine at least a month before they expire
