"Your Contact [xyz] is now on Twitter" - HUH?

    I get a handful of emails (and Twitter notifications) every few days stating that "my contact so-and-so is now on Twitter as [some random Twitter handle]".

    Couple of questions:

    1. Where is Twitter pulling "my contacts" from? I have absolutely no idea who these people are. They are not my "contacts".

    2. I've tried to find the setting within Twitter to turn these notifications off since they are of no use to me, especially since these are not people I even know.

    Sorry if this has been covered - I did a couple of forum searches and came up with nothing.
