Besides working to move up in the SERP's for a particular keyword, I basically churn out unique content. The more you write the more traffic you get in the long run. This isn't a quick method by any means, so it requires work and patience.

submit your site to the directories as much as you can.

link building is another way of getting more traffic as well as backlinks.

try adding your blog to the social bookmarking sites.

submit some articles about your blog to the article directories.

add some interesting content onto your blog so that people will visit for the content. (Important)

Write articles, submit to quality directories (on a page with a decent pagerank), and build links from other websites and social networking sites.

We consistently get traffic from Stumble Upon, sometimes months after the original post ran.

submit articles, advertise, insert meta tags with a good page title, submit to major engines only (MSN, yahoo, google, etc.). BE patient, Rome was not built in a day so your PR will definitely not be number one in one day.

Write inciteful and provocative entries that reference posts you read on blogs that are more popular than yours. The trackback links produced will not only get you read by their readers, but also get the attention of the author of the popular blog, which may result in a link from them on their blogroll.

    Oh yeah, one more...

Find a blog similar to yours that has about the same level of readership. Ask the owner to swap guest-blogging with you. The goal here would be for both of you to double your readership by getting their readers to your site and your readers to theirs.

SEO is a good start, but content is for sure becoming a winner for me with Apopularitycontest.com. With 4,000+ polls on the site I get search hits for all sorts of wierd things.
