Your advice on directory submissions, please

    Hello,

I have exactly $270 to spend on directory submissions. That's it. Looking at the Aviva Directory blog's listing of the highest Page Strength directories (http://www.avivadirectory.com/strongest-directories/), I can do one of two things with my little tiny budget: I can pay to get into 7 directories total (3 7.5 strength, 3 7.0 strength, 1 6.5 strength), or I can pay to get into 18 directories total (2 7.0 strength, 7 6.5 strength, and 9 6.0 strength).

So this is a quality vs. quantity question: are 7 directories of higher page strength preferable to 18 directories of slightly slower (but still strong) page strength?

    The directories in question are:

    Option 1
    Page Strength 7.5
    http://www.alivedirectory.com
    http://www.avivadirectory.com
    http://www.uncoverthenet.com

    Page Strength 7
    http://www.2yi.net
    http://www.sevenseek.com
    http://directory.v7n.com

    Page Strength 6.5
    http://www.familyfriendlysites.com

    Or Option 2
    Page Strength 7
    http://www.2yi.net
    http://www.gii.in

    Page Strength 6.5
    http://www.apahcinc.org
    http://www.e-topic.com
    http://www.ewebpages.org
    http://www.familyfriendlysites.com
    http://www.linksjuice.com
    http://www.map100.com
    http://directory.sootle.com

    Page Strength 6
    http://9ug.com
    http://www.abilogic.com
    http://www.biz-king.com
    http://www.cascandra.com
    http://www.cbravo.com
    http://www.goongee.com
    http://www.mingleon.com
    http://www.webotopia.org
    http://www.webxperience.org

Both options work out to almost exactly the $270 I have to spend. Which option would you choose?

I also have a secondary question regarding free directory submissions. Using the Vilesilencer list as an example, should I submit to every directory listed, or only those at or above at certain PR value?

Thanks very much for your advice!

I like to look at exactly the category the site will be listed, home page strength is only part of the equation.

Using the list can be helpful as some people believe PS is better than PR. But I would like to check inner page PR, which is the PageRank of the very page your link would be on.

Or you can research deeper than that...

Check domain backlink (# of backlinks from unique domain)
SERP position (rankings in G SERP)
    # of outbound links on the page your link will be listed
    # of outbound links on home page (fewer the better)

    Even deeper ;)

If you pay for a review there is a good chance the directory owner will renew the domain name next year but paying for PR or PS or anything else, is crazy. Rather submit to the list at Vilesilencer. Its as current as you will find anywhere and you will get at leas a 60% acceptance rate. Then forget about them and add to the new directories as they are announced. Its best to get in whilst the webmasters are working on the submissions and before they go paid That means submit to everything that has no PR or zero at the most.

Once you are comfortable with what you are doing start buying but spread your money wisely.

I speak as a submitter rather than a directory owner.

Look at the directories one by one for the exact category you are going to submit to. Most directories are stronger on some categories and weaker on others.

Instead of rushing to spend all your budget immediately keep some aside for the next couple of months - great offers sometimes come up in the 'solicitations and announcements' section and it would be a shame to miss them. As example, I submitted a site to botw yesterday morning, and they announced a 25% discount yesterday afternoon.

Some of the directories on the list insist you use the sitename instead of anchor text unless you pay for a featured listing, which might effect how much you need to pay.

For free directories - start at the top of the list and work down, a few a day!

Finally - there are a lot of great directories on that list (and lots of very good directories not on the list) and I'm listed in many of them but I'll give special mention to ewebpages - I submitted a couple of sites there a few months ago and they both now have PR4 detail pages with no sitewide links on the page. That is impressive!

    Cheers

Ask yourself how much one link is worth to you. How much revenue is it going to bring you? Then figure out just how much time you want to spend looking. As long as its indexed, as long as they are not using no follow tags you want to submit and forget. Thats why you want to make use of a reputable list. It saves you the time you are not ever going to get any meaningful return on.

if u already have a bunch of backlinks from free/lowcost directories or other sources i would choose first option .. if still a few backlinks then i would choose second option .. quality is very important but quantity also counts

What is the difference between a free link and one from a quality directory? That is, other than the long term viability of the respective sites. Where is the added value?

Going through some of the directories on the lists, I thought the submission charges rather high on some considering the PR rank of the page that my particular site would have been listed on.

That's okay if you've got a large budget to spend. But you haven't.

I wouldn't rush into spending your money. Gradually get the free directory listings. Then invest your money slowly and with thought.

Would links from the directories you mention be better than links from a well-established, good PR site which is related to your site? Seems to me there are always reasonably-priced links for sale here at DP.

I'm agreeing with Juna here, there are millions of free directories to submit to that will do your site plenty of good.

There's free listings daily here on the forum you should take advantage of, if you haven't already.
