Young bloggers - is age a factor in the stuff you read?

I'm interested in knowing whether the success of people like Carl Ocab has been influenced by age/etc. I wrote a post (check it out here) about what I think of young bloggers riding their ages to success and plan on making it a series.

I'm asking you guys whether you think it's "cooler" or something for a young person to blog. If so, why?

In short, does age make a difference for you?

I think it really depends on the context. I mean, if a 15-year-old is running a business blog, and claims to have all the answers to online money making, I'm going to be a little suspicious. This isn't to say that they can't be incredibly successful online, simply that to be sharing that sort of experience at that age might make me think their views will be slightly limited by their age. On the other hand, a 60-something blogger talking about popular club scenes would also raise some eyebrows.

Blogging is unique because people who are slightly smarter than the average joe in any particular field are able to share that knowledge. In the end, it doesn't matter how old or young you are, as long as you clearly know what you're talking about.

Exactly my point. Content should be judged on its merits, not on the merits (or non-merits?) of the person writing it.

in most cases, trying to use age as a selling point is somewhat unnecessary/arrogant; age is relatively irrelevant in internet marketing

Well, I don't think it's necessarily irrelevant. Again, it depends on who you're targeting. Going back to the example of a young entrepreneur, their marketing message might be "if I can do it, so can you" for younger readers while an older, experienced business blogger could use that to his advantage (i.e. "22 years in the industry"). What is interesting about blogs is that, unlike consulting in general where age actually can be a significant factor that becomes hard to control, blogger can utilize their age to promote a specific message, or ignore age entirely if they so choose.

That's an excellent point, and it's probably one of the reasons someone Carl Ocab is popular. His content isn't too unique but I suppose people are jealous of him and his starting early and might have the "if he can do it, so can I" mentality.

    LOL I am 14 :D
What stops me from blogging - nothing...
I do everything just like all of you, I read everything same as you do!
I just don't think the same... I don't think about money as I see it as extra money like pocket cash...
So I do almost everything like you, nothing even stops under 18 to watch porn these days lol :D

Age doesn't matter these days! :)

It is beneficial for the young blogger, but only in particular circumstances. I may read a post or two from their blog out of curiosity, but they would have trouble being an authority blog in my eyes.

Age shouldn't have ANY factor in your opinions towards that particular blogger. You should solely rely on the quality of content within the blogs.

Like Rintrus said, age doesn't matter these days. Kids are capable of anything they put their minds too. Of course age = experience, but not wisdom and intelligence. I know plenty of kids who are smarter than people who are 40-60 and I also know kids who are as unintelligent as a 4 year old.

Take everything you read with a grain of salt, a reputable author will often have more cred, but age isn't that determining factor.

Age is irrelevant to me, what matters most to me is logos, ethos, and pathos (Art of Rhetoric)?.

If you have half a brain and know what you're talking about and it interests me and you sound credible and logical, I'll read it. If you have a thousand and one spelling mistakes and just display a disregard for your readers and tend not to care I probably won't spend time reading it. Personally I am a minor and I do a lot of web related things, so success is clearly achievable, but I might not tend to agree with those who flaunt their age as a means of drawing attention, all it does is bring about an aurora of arrogance.

Even more ironic because I'm only 17 ;).

The post made sense to me I guess...

Pathos, Logos, and Ethos are theories by Socrates.

Never insinuated you weren't smart. The fact that you're fourteen and on a forum like DP shows your entrepreneur-ness. I'm fourteen too and my first language was Russian so I [kinda] know what you mean.

If the article is about something I'm interested in then I will read it, its pretty much that simple. If your blogs are well written it shouldnt be apparent that you arent an adult yet.

age is irrelevant to my decision, compared to quality of content. I've seen 13 year old posts crap on myspace that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, and then there's kids like carl ocab.
