Depends on if you are making a brandable site, meaning you want return visitors or if you are just after SE traffic to come click some ads.

If your site is focused more around making money off of return visitors then you do need an easy to remember domain name. But it always doesnt have to deal with the product or service you sell. It just needs to be easily remembered. For instance, what the hell is a Google or a Yahoo?

Well, you don't really need the best domain because what is best in the first place. What you need is good content and good advertising and at would retain your visitors and draw new one.

A name however should be something which would stick on your visitors' mind.

Simple is better. The longer a domain names is the more people will not remember it. Keep it short and to the point. Have some domain name with product in it but make it short.

Depends on the source of the traffic but a short brandable domain name is always preferable, sometimes you may buy an older domain for its traffic & other advantages.

Sometimes you can find a good domain name and then it obviously points to a use for it and it can lead from there (see my blog post).
