You are wasting your time with links

Google backlinks :
link:yahoo.com/ : 4,390 links PR 9
link:youtube.com : 2180 Links PR 9
link:facebook.com/ : 135,000 links PR10
link:msn.com/ : 48,100 links PR 8
link:google.com : 161,000 links PR 10

Look at this, All these sites are top and most relevant sites in the world! Link building does matter, Several aspects are taken in consideration i think, like relevancy, content, popularity, etc. So it will effect serps, Youtube and Yahoo might not need backlinks bcz of there relevancy and content. News sites might not need backlinks to get up the ladder (In search rankings) as they provide information, and search engines and people look for that information. Sites which offer products and other services, which people are not desperately looking for need backlinks to get relevancy, and that is gained by backlinks. Every aspect in SERPS is counted. Unrelevant and of topic links can sometimes bring you traffic which can convert more than organic. Nothing is waste of time, as every little bit contributes.

I have 2 movie sites. 1 gets more than 3000 UV/day the other gets 300 UV/day, first has 673 links (yahoo) and the other has 1500 (yahoo), content played a part.

I have an mp3 site and software site, mp3 - 500 UV Links : 451(yahoo) software- 150-200 UV Links : 139(yahoo)

So what do you think the purpose of PR is ?

Apart from how long the site has been around, how well optimised it is and how relevant backlinks are then PR is surely the other major factor ?

Having optimised your site and generated all your content there ain't much else you can do other than generate high quality backlinks preferably from sites with a decent PR themselves. This obviously increases your site's PR and position in SERPS. I agree that you dont want to get fixated on PR - the goal is high SERPS, but give me the choice between a backlink from a site with PR1 or PR8 I know which I'd go for (all other things being equal)

 

I have had problems with this as well, i need to get people that will actually trade with me.
