You are wasting your time with links

    Hi
First I want you to know that I am new to this forum, and spent the last week reading some very interesting posts on this forum, especially on the link developing forum.
Link developing is very important, but I think some of you are wasting their time on strategies that will not work.

Do not forget what your goal is; your goal is to increase your targeted traffic (SEO traffic) by getting into top search results from google, not to build links or just being on top:)

I worked on SEO Company for 3 years, now I am starting my own online business.

And those 3 years I have learned some very interesting things.

The most important element of increasing your SEO traffic is to research; research your click through rate, your conversion rate and your highest conversion traffic source.
Research your competition, try to know who they are and how they are doing their marketing, do not pay attention to their products and services.

I wanted to get into Home business niche, and I made a small research that could be very interesting.

One of the sites that I found on the first page of google is having a PR5 with only 547 backlinks, those links came from only one PR5 backlink (from a asindexing.org sub-page), 3 PR2 links from Blog Posts, and 2 PR1 links from an article directories the rest where PR0 from directory listing and articles.

How did this site reach PR5 and first page of google for highly competitive keywords with these results?

So know what you are doing before doing it, and know what results you want to get.

Firstly this is obvious, he is on the top because the link he is getting has a big trust in Google's eyes....Secondly you never know exactly how the pagerank is passed from one page to another.I've seen many pages just reaching PR5 from getting only a single link from PR6 page and i've also seen the pages with hundreds of links from high pr website and yet they are pr2.

Were you concentrating on just finding out how the site got PR of 5 or were you more interested in the reasons for top position in serps?
Your research findings seem to point out that you were more interested in just the PR juice and not the serp position! :(

    Regards,

This statement is kind of an oxymoron - you pretty much need those backlinks to foster targeted traffic and get into search results..

Although it's easier to point out PR as opposed to SERPS since PR is more constant (only changing every 3 months or so), the process to improve one is the same as the other.

Part of that PR 5 site that sits on top of the SERPS is not only their links, but the size of the site etc. Without knowing some other factors it is impossible to judge if 500 links would be enough to overtake them. Personally, I compete with one specific site which has been around since basically the inception of the internet, making it dang near impossible to pass without Herculean effort on my part.

good point MarkAse! - sites that go WAY back seem to (generally speaking) have more authority w/ rankings which makes it difficult to overtake such a site.

Did you compare on page optimization too? It's influence in the amount (and/or quality) of backlinks you need to rank well for a certain ST is often overlooked.

In my experience (quality) backlinks are the most important ranking factor. And yes, it seems also to me that you analysed the pagerank juice flow and not the actual ranking factors.

Quality backlinks on Web2.0 properties with HighPR and Google respect are most important for search engine rankings. It's been working for me for the last 5 years so no matter what anybody else says, this works. The higher the PR of the pages your backlinks are coming from, the better. Linkwheel a bunch of HighPR Web2.0 properties with related content linking back to your site, and your set as far as an "advanced SEO strategy" goes

Linkbuilding is not a waste of time, however this bad seo advice is. As with everything in life it is best to be well rounded. The first thing one should look at is the content and structure of there site. Second, focus on relevant backlinks and do not worry about the pagerank from which it comes. Relevant links bring targeted traffic, does not matter if they are 1,2 or 3 way links. THEN, go ahead and build one way web 2.0 links from high pr sites as a bonus, BUT pace yourself as this should appear as natural as possible. Excuse the spelling as I am typing on the go : )

you do indeed seo to get better ranking in the SERPS to get more dedicated traffice. I agree.

But then you are talking about PR. Why focussing on PR ? You don't need PR to get a good ranking in the SERPS.
