I vote for #4. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Yet we allow their images to grace our currency and they are considered heroes of the Republic.

For hundreds of years, women in the west were not allowed to own property or vote. They were second class citizens. Even in America.

It doesn't mean it isn't wrong or immoral, but to ignore that cultural standards are constantly evolving is silly.

And really, what difference does that make? Has God issued a commandment on the age of marriage or sexual relations? I'd think it would be logical to measure his viability as a prophet against the word of God (as he preaches it), not against our moral standards, circa 2008.

I mean, how logical would it be to judge Mohammad's authenticity by Christian standards? Or Jewish standards? Or Buddhist standards?

No. You know that I'm agnostic. The only reason I was drawn into this thread, is that a Muslim is stating Mo consummating with a 9 yr. old is a made up lie. When in fact, it is written right in their religious text. The temptation to say something was just too great for me.

 

I know. I just find it weird that people are using retro-active values to make judgments. Certainly today, this is unacceptable in the West. But if Bedouins are still doing it, and have been for more than 15 centuries, then I'm not quite sure how to judge that.

At one time, we thought that blacks should not be allowed to be schooled with whites. In fact, that was only 60 years ago. Who knows what we will consider acceptable/unacceptable actions today, in another 60 or 1500 years?
