But Google remains picky about whom it hires, even as its payroll has ballooned from just under 700 employees at the end of 2002 to about 2,700 workers today.

In its quest to identify the programming elite, Google recently inserted an unusual aptitude test in such magazines as MIT's Technology Review, the Linux Journal, Mensa, Dr. Dobbs and Physics Today.

The 21-question test includes such geek brain twisters like, "How many different ways can you color an icosahedron with one of three colors on each face?" and "On an infinite, two-dimensional rectangular lattice of 1-ohm resistors, what is the resistance between two nodes that are a knight's move away?"

The test also includes more subjective, tongue-in-cheek requests like "Write a haiku describing possible methods for predicting search traffic seasonality" and "What is the most beautiful math equation ever derived?"

With all those bright minds but yet they cant seem to produce relevant resutls for my industry in most major markets. LOl I even have seen a online Drug store in the top ten for a MAJOR real estate key phrase.

MSN cant come soon enough and I hope Mr Bill knocks them right down off their perch. I also have top ten rankings for my major key phrase to in G so believe me its not just me complaining because I have no G rankings.

I hate to harp on this but, how can a company who has all those great minds produce results so bad within my industry? I would even imagine that there are quite a few people even from MIT or any of the ivy league schools that dont get jobs with google.

I for one hope that google does turn out relevant results this coming year but I dont see it happening. I would also believe that most consumers are tired of not seeing relevant results with google as well. I can state one fact pertaining to google and the other SEs. The leads that I get off of yahoo and MSN and AOL which I know is driven by google produce more closings then google leads.

Maybe that is another good thread. Where is your best conversion coming from within the SEs.

The second test posted on Mensa was solved by another colleague.

You will get email congratulations from Google and a possible interest in employment - You can save everyone's time by explaining that you are not interested in employment, but just the enjoyment of "brain teasers"

Some people actually enjoy this type of activity!

Maybe because there are several million not too dumb webmasters and SEOs out there trying to outwit the algo?
