I use this site to check competitors website for backlinks. I was wondering how often the listing is updated. does anyone know of another free service like this. I am sure that there is one. Just wondering how others research competitors.

I would go for SEMRush to determine my competitors.

Yahoo explorer is definitely the best tool for checking backlinks of other sites.

Another tool is backlingwatch. Other tools may be available from time to time but most of them do not last long.

Be aware that those tools (incl. yahoo explorer) list only backlinks to a page (not the whole site).

So, if you check backlinks to the homepage example.com, you won't get the backlinks to other pages of the site such as example.com/dir/ .

On yahoo explorer it lists how many pages, does this mean that is how many pages the site has?

    Yahoo explorer lists :
    1. amount of (indexed) pages
    2. amount of backlinks

As far as "pages" are concerned, they are the pages that are indexed by Yahoo. The actual amount of pages of the site may be higher if some pages are not indexed for various reasons (new pages, robot txt, duplication,...).

Keep in mind that search engines consider subdomain as a separate site.
    Ex.
    https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?p=http://www.digitalpoint.com/&fr=sfp
    Digitalpoint has 31957 indexed pages

    https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?p=http://forums.digitalpoint.com/&y=Explore+URL&fr=sfp
    Forums.digitalpoint.com has 5624395 indexed pages.

Does this mean that you won't get backlinks for sub.example.com as well?

In fact, as far as links are concerned, Yahoo explorer shows either links to "entire site" or links to "only this URL", as you prefer.

I understand that links to entire site include subpages. They may include also subdomains only if the site has been authenticated (i. e. your own site).

Other backlink tools list only backlinks to a page (not the whole site).
