Yahoo showing fewer backlinks to my site.

Sometimes I use Yahoo Site Explorer to get a list of backlinks to my site. About a month ago there were about 900 backlinks on the list, but now there are only about 600.

I know that the site hasn't lost that many backlinks, in fact I'm pretty sure that it gained some overall, because of directory submissions I've been making.

Has this happened to anyone else? And does anyone have an explanation?

    Thank you.

It's possible Yahoo deemed some sites that were linking back to you useless, and banned them from their listing. Doubtful though.

If a lot of your backlinks were from one place (i.e. forum signatures, blog, etc) it is possible that that site went down, and yahoo tried to reindex the links, and they weren't there.

Other than that, I can't really think of much that would cause this...

some pages used to link to you does not exist anymore, and maybe people start taking your link out of the pages.

Also, the links could be from blogs or forums that aren't allowing archived content older than a certain date to be crawled for one reason or another. They would then be dropped from the index when it updates.

Try using backlinkwatch.com or domain-pop.com to narrow down your backlinks into an easier to see list. You may notice certain ones missing.

Give sometime to Yahoo! to show you correct backliks number.

I've seen a slight drop- about 25 or so. Probably just normal fluctuation in my case, but I've heard elsewhere people talking about seeing bigger drops recently.

Yahoo is very slow. But It indexes sites with High PR a bit faster and better.Your site must be a low PR site.

Yahoo! doesn't care about PR :)

It cares about the backlinks it sees: their quality and quantity. Of course some on site aspects affect SERPs, but getting indexed depends mostly on backlinks. At least that's my impression.
