Yahoo or Google PPC

Talking with my directors about which company to use for PPC I suggested that there is less competition on Yahoo and therefore the ads are cheaper. They argued that Google has a larger market share so we should go for them.

In my mind this makes no sense as a logical argument. You are buying visits for x amount. You want x to be as low as possible. Even if you would run out of visitors from Yahoo! at that point only would you then start buying from Google. It just doesn't make any sense. I'd even speculate that the quality of visits would be better from Yahoo! as it Google is aimed at everybody whereas Yahoo! is a consumer friendly portal, right?

    Why not try both?

That way, you can find out which works best for your business. There's no definitive answer on which is best: it will depend upon industry sector and your specific website in many instances.

Yahoo isn't always cheaper - cost per click depends heavily on competition in the spaces. I almost always recommend someone start in Google to get the best learnings possible since the audience is so much bigger.

If you want to stay away from Google and try something smaller, I've gotten good results on Bing lately - very small audience of course, but CPC has been lower on a lot of the accounts I run. Just a thought.

PPC in Google would be the best than Yahoo because of its larger market. You can get more traffic to your site from Google than Yahoo.

There's a very good point made above about Yahoo not always being cheaper than Google.

That seems to come as a surprise to many but Yahoo's lack of traffic (comparatively) doesn't always mean that your clicks will cost less - far from it.

I haven't seen yahoo adwords until now. To my experience if you have good budget and really net some exposure then G is best.

It is in your best interest to test both Google and Yahoo. Add MSN/Bing to that test as well.

You don't have to spend a lot of money testing your keywords and advertising on each of these, but without running your campaigns on each site how can you possibly come to the correct answer as to which is best for you and your company?

So test every traffic source you can and track all of your efforts. You can use free software to track, something like Tracking202 will work perfectly. The data you gain from tracking these PPC tests will be extremely valuable not just to your advertising efforts but to anyone in your organization that is involved in the marketing process.

And who knows, you may find that you are making money on all 3 of these search engines. Without testing, how can you ever be sure?
