If I understand you to be asking what seems to help with Yahoo ranking, I have to say submitting to buzz.yahoo.com and yahoo bookmarks helps my sites do well in Yahoo.

I also agree with the meta tag thing.. I do LOCAL only seo and find that adding the state I'm wanting an seo client of mine to rank in does seem to help in getting my clients site to perform in yahoo serps.

I was a bit confused about your statement of "html formatted" until I read Claudek's reply (I'd not thought about a .php page not performing as well as a .html page) so that makes sense to me. (and thanks for pointing out that distinction, I'd not thought of that as a possible issue)

I agree with the "yahoo isn't as important as google" that everyone wishing to boost their post count offers but I have this to add:

I use yahoo ranking to boost my Google ranking.

To do so I get my clients site to perform well in Yahoo serps... then add the actual url of said yahoo serps page to my clients site, Googlebot will follow the serp url and see that my client ranks in Yahoo.

get em both chasing each others tail so to speak.

I'm only offering what seems to work well for me, not saying that will stay that way indefinitely, but for the past year it's been my experience in achieving ranking results for my paying clients.

    I've noticed this too.

I think that a part of this has to do with the technologies that Yahoo has deployed.

Remember .. it was Yahoo that bought Google's primary database out from under them in '94 .. Alltheweb (Norway) supplied Google with database listings to taste and Google, in turn, had supplied Yahoo with it's crawls of Alltheweb, and Inktomi database listings.

In March of 94', Yahoo bought AltaVista, Alltheweb, and Inktomi. All of which had indexes plum full of html listings, and crawlers that were as tough as old Dodge trucks.

The old crawlers can read html and xhtml just fine, whereas I've noticed the Googlbot goes a little slower on the html than it does on the xhtml.
Google, as a result of this, and not wanting to expend the resources for it's crawls, will index the lighter xhtml first, and as a result, the older html doesn't appear to list as highly in Google (on average). Google doesn't so much have to be reading the meta info these days either, since there are no tables in the xhtml to upset the Googlebot and his picky parsing habits .. reading the page content for Google, with regard to xhtml, is handled as easy as the older bots (Slurp) can handle reading through and around the tables in the older html.

I'm not so sure that we should be ruling Yahoo out just yet, as they still get more traffic in the US and Canada to their news and mail than Google does theirs. Yahoo's bots aren't so much interested in the xml site maps either (though sitemaps work as well with Yahoo as they do with Google), because since they can read nearly anything, and in most cases better and faster than Google can, they don't have half the worries that a deep crawl might produce.

If there isn't a sitemap xml in an older html built domain, Slurp still charges in for the deep crawl, whereas under the same conditions, Googlebot won't .. if you don't have a sitemap xml on board with Google, then your deep crawl experience with them will be next near to nill.

As an added note to this, I tend to view the Yahoo Slurp as more of a discovery engine, whereas on the other hand, Googlebot is more of a listing engine ..

Yahoo, because of it's deep crawling, often times digs up more in the way of content, than Google does with it's expecting content to just arrive on the silver platter of xhtml and sitemaps.
