Well, what i believe is that, Yahoo did not lose to Google, just that google got more popular nowadays because they bought over a lot of good sites..
There really should be at least one alternative, I found myself using Yahoo occasionally when Googles image results arent giving me what I need. I think Yahoo should try different things if it ever wants a bigger chunk of the market.
yahoo and msn can't beat google by this time, we can't tell what may happen in the future. I just base my answer on my site's stats, google if my #1 referral second is yahoo but with a huge distance.
Hahaha very funny. Ontopic: I dont think so that microsoft and yahoo can make some good competition for google. Not even to mention that microsoft dosent have cash money to buy yahoo, they need to loan as they said.

MSN dropped the offer, but I still believe the will be very competitive. Just look at what they have done with the X-Box. They are very good at being successful!
I also don't think so yahoo and msn can beat google.....because it is has very simple look and most of the common people like simplicity! And as compare with yahoo and msn, they took long time for being uploaded......that is why mostly common masses like to use Google
