Yahoo launching its own Facebook site

Yahoo has secretly launched its social networking website Mash, which is aimed to take on the likes of Facebook and MySpace.

The service is currently only open to specially invited testers. It has been developed as a social networking website where you can share your life experiences with friends and family, Reuters reports.

Mash is Yahoo's second attempt to launch its own social networking website - in 2005 it launched Yahoo 360 degrees. However, the new service is entirely separate from the previous site, Yahoo said.

"Ongoing product innovation is important to Yahoo and we continue to test various products and services to gain feedback from our users. Mash, an experimental profile service, is an example of this ongoing testing," a company spokesperson said.

Lets see how long this lasts. I think yahoo should just start buying some sites instead or trying to make new ones until it gets more market share.

Yahoo is doing 20 things at once. Doing everything to catch up now is just too late. Making stupid purchases left and right is also like a chicken without a head. They had a chance to buy Facebook a few months ago. They blew it. They had the OPPORTUNITY to be acquired by Microsoft. They blew it. In the end, buying all these overpriced companies will be their down fall. Within the next few years, Yahoo WILL be a subsidiary of a bigger company. Possibly Google if they leave the search engine game. Google was their primary search provider only a few years ago. Possibly IBM or SUN may buy them in a fire sale. Who knows. Doubt they will be independent for very much longer. They need some real executives at the helm.

    Let's see:
Yahoo did offer to buy Facebook but the offer was rejected
The Microsoft buying Yahoo thing was a rumour only
They are the most visited website in the world.

Maybe best if you keep your misguided opinions to yourself.

Most of your "opinions" were factually wrong. Better to say nothing than to misinform.

Dude, Nothing Can Take on Facebook. Yahoo tried to buy Facebook and they refused. Watch the video at developers.facebook.com. Facebook is going to eventually take over the world. Theres a reason facebook didnt sell. 65% of their users use Facebook daily!! Myspace doesnt have 15%. Facebook knows whats goin on in the social networking world. They are getting ready to pass Google in Traffic usage. <- Factual Statement.

My opinion, but i believe it to be true.

Yep it allows for friends (or anyone if you change your settings) to edit your profile.

Which is why a lot of businesses won't be pushing the product like Facebook and MySpace. On those two, people add friends to get a network of people (potential buyers)... with Mash they won't because they would be afraid of the wikilike friends.

Teens won't especially like it either since it would be hard to find and make friends with people without being scared of what they will edit.

IMHO this will not go well. It might be a hit at first with all the people wanting to try it, but after that it will only be a select group of people who just use the net to chat with friends they know IRL.

O that would be interesting. I don't think they will be able to take down facebook though. Since lots of people will not be willing to make the inital switch.

Yahoo is always too late for everything. When MySpace buzz is dying out, Yahoo comes out with one, When Adsense owns the advertising, Yahoo comes out with ypn.

They need to think of something before Google and have Google chase them for once.
Look at their stocks for the past few months. Plummeted. Everynow and then I go to stocks on my iPhone just because I have it, and Yahoo seems to make the least progress or drop the most.

You are somewhat correct in your assertions. If you think about it though, of all companies, Yahoo is the one that should have had a social networking thing going on - they did not implement that 360 thing well so are sort of starting fresh in some respects.

Now, in regards to the starting late thing, do not forget Yahoo Answers which came out late and left all else on the wayside, making Google close their version which came out earlier. So there is some track record for coming in late and going to the top.

Settings can be changed to allow only certain people (or only yourself) to edit your page - the Wikipedia-esque feature is only there for those who want it.
