Yahoo inviting Hackers to SUNNYVALE

The approximately 300 hackers that swept onto the firm’s campus in Sunnyvale, California, had the first chance to tinker with the inner workings of Yahoo online offerings such as its globally popular free email.

Yahoo earlier in the week outlined a shift to an “Open Strategy” that it believes will jazz-up the website and lead to meshing offerings from hot online properties such as Amazon and iTunes with its web pages.

Sounds like they are going to open their whole site up to hackers meaning your emails are unsafe. Yahoo sucks.

Those guys are good guys. Professional hackers. To see if there are any cracks in the programming. So all of us are safe. They hired those hackers.

I heard an old Chinese story (not sure if it's from China or another country).

A landlord just built a castle, and didn't want any thief to break in and steal stuffs. So he created a contest for thieves and dared them to break in. The winner would have a big prize. Then several thieves did succeed in breaking in. He handed them the prize, but also sent secret assassins to kill them all, so that no one could ever break in his castle again.

Sounds familiar right? Maybe Yahoo's doing the same thing lol. Just kidding.

they are doing it for security purposes. If the hackers find an opening they tell them and than they make the security stronger so no one can hack it

Or they can say whoops and hide it from Yahoo so later down the road they can plan a hostile takeover :p

Pretty smart though, let the hackers attack you full force, then fix all the problems.

Did anyone actually read the article? They were using the word hacking as in programming. It was not referring to opening up Yahoo to test its security. Here's a quote of some of the things that were done at this Hackathon:

    ---------
"Software creations included a “Ganzbot” robot that reads people news, weather, Twitter messages or other information streamed to their home pages by automated delivery mechanisms known as “feeds.”

An Icarus.tv hack served up music videos in online radio style, scouring the Internet and fetching performances that promise to fit people’s tastes."
    ---------

The event was to encourage innovation to help it become a player again after the failed Microsoft deal.

I think a lot of you don't understand the meaning of the term hacker. :) Its not meant to be malicious when used like this, these guys are just penetration testers trying to help find problems.

'hacker' was never a malicious term at all until the media distorted it.

either way, you can hack code or hack systems. both have benefits. you can't secure something if you don't know how it breaks. besides, most exploits are caused by poor quality coding and a lack of attention to basic details.

metasploit is a handy tool, but i've never used it personally (played around with it, never actually put it to use).

social engineering is way more effective for getting good information.

    what am i saying? lol...
