Alll u know is the word SPAM go learn something my friend. the script he's talking about is getting the contact list of ur msn or hotmail. This is mostly used to promote your website and getting more traffic.

I have a prelaunch website and am just about finished integrating a contact importer. I stumbled on some scary webposts of people calling this technique spam. Personally, I don't see it that way since the user is choosing who to have the email sent to. Novel idea in my book - just making it easy for the user to tell their friends. However, I also read some scary webposts of people having their domains locked and a fine applied for doing this. Godaddy appears to have a policy stating any email sent without permission of the recipient is spam. So.... the contact importer would be considered spam? (keep in mind I have a two step process, the importing of contacts and the 'choosing' of invite recipients) if I do this do I run the risk of having the domain locked and fined?? Has anyone had any experience with this?

It can't be spam though, becuase if the recipitent didn't want emails from the person then they wouldn't ahve them on their address book anyway!

 

That's not necessarily the case. You can include people in your address book without their permission. So if your website uses a members address book you can't assume that you have permission to contact each of the people in that address book.

justwondering, personally I haven't had any problems with godaddy but I have heard that they use their anti-spam department as a fairly major source of revenue. There is a conflict of interest there in my opinion. Having said that spam is unsolicited emails. The emails sent out by these scripts are unsolicited by the recipient. They could be described as spam.

The technique is a favourite of social websites though and they seem to have no problems. Personally as long as you don't go crazy I think you'll be OK.
