Yahoo Groups to website transition

Does anyone have a Yahoo Group that is doing very well and want to make it into a site of it s own? Has anyone ever done this before?

I'd like to hear from anyone that has experience with migrating to a static site that you have more control over. Things like the CMS used and plugins/themes. I have been using Drupal but find the themes aren't that great and it is a little bit complicated for many users. If there were a clone of the groups though that would make it an easy switch. Anyhow, the point in doing this is to have more control to make some money. Yahoo groups give you like 2000 characters to put on the main page and that is it.

So what is your plan to do it and retain your userbase? Also, one thing to worry about is if you abort the old site and it was popular/easy then another user may make a similar group and take your base.

I didn't know you could do this with yahoo groups. I do remember the days when yahoo groups was KING.... I loved them 5-10 years ago. It's hard to find genuine stuff there these days. (sorry off topic), but interested in your project :)

Unfortunately, this behind the scenes probability holds a lot of us back. Just the thought of losing it will sometimes prevent us from starting or completing an extraordinary project

Well, it isn't easy. You can export your Yahoo Groups user base to a comma separated file, and then use a module like Drupal user import to email all of the users of their new login info for the new site. In the end though you want all of your users to stay on the new site so you can monetize it.
