I'm trying to submit some sites to the yahoo directory. Some of the sites categories qualify for the free submittal which is great . The only problem is how long does it take? Is this a process that takes months / years / lifetime like DMOZ or does it actually take a specific amount of time in most cases like 30 days or so? What was your experience submitting to the yahoo directory for a free site. I can also pay the $299, but I'm hoping that I get don't have to do that. thanks!
It depends - in the categories that are well represented, I'm not hearing of anyone getting listed for free even if the option is available. In the categories that are lacking content, I have heard of sites being added via that option. In the past it was generally within 30 days; not so sure about the time frame now. How long ago did you submit? There used to be a notation to resubmit after 3/4 weeks if it wasn't listed; not sure if it still holds true.
I submitted my site to yahoo today and another one about a week ago. I'll keep tabs on it and see if it gets submitted, then update this thread in a month, as long as I remember
If you are looking for a main category listing (vs the local regional listings) you need to pay for a review. I have a bunch of paid listings and have also submitted some quality non-commercial sites that don't run ads (DMOZ listed, linked to by many edu and gov sites) and have never heard anything - and this goes back as long as 5 years.
I normally pay $299 for the submission. Two years ago I submitted two sites to yahoo free submittal for testing, both sites got listed 7-8 months after the submission.
I submitted on Aug 1st.. still nothing, today is Aug 17th 2010 I'll give it a month or maybe slightly longer. Hopefully it doesn't take an eternity like the DMOZ lottery mafia. I submitted 3 sites, hopefully one gets through If worse comes to worse I'll just have to foot the bill and pay.
In my experience it is tough to get approval from yahoo free directory. My site is pending nearly 4 months.
