I am in the United States, and I can't. I am, however, pretty close to Canada so maybe it thinks I'm in Canada.
I keep wishing they wouldn't close the yahoo directory, I somewhat think of it as a useful communal resource, and like that it's been around for ages....too bad things are so profit driven these days under the neo-liberal model of things. I know I sound old/er but frankly I know that many quality publishing houses publish books (many of them the classics aka Literature, etc) which don't sell many copies and don't make the company money, but they still carry that kind of line of books, it's something of a tradition to have a number of classics and even poetry titles on hand and in print for many houses, even if you don't "make money".....Becoming something of a lost tradition thanks to money makers taking over, especially in the high tech industry where everything has to be new and shiny and a big seller. oh well....there are still a number of decent directories out there, and dmoz has changed significantly recently too. Sure hope aol doesn't close them down
Yahoo directory is still working fine here on my end. But as the news said, "it is finally coming to the end of its slow death."
Good question. I just popped over there for the first time in years, and was amazed to find that they still offer dialup Internet services, and three different levels of it at that, from $6.99 a month to $27.99 a month. The best I can determine, they offer a womb for those who are afraid of the big-bad Internet, with an emphasis on security tools. I can't tell for sure, but they probably still have forums, chat, and other things for those who are afraid to venture out onto the larger Internet.
We still offer dial up. Its not that people are afraid, its just that there are still areas NOT served by anything other than a land line.
That was ignorant of me, then. I thought I was in one of those areas fifteen years ago, when I was living in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. For quite a while, our only access to the Internet was AOL dialup. I am in Maine now, but we had high-speed Internet in the Valley before I left in 2001, and over the past several years, my complaints have been over the speed of my high-speed Internet. Although I have a DSL connection right now, we generally use our Verizon hotspot as an ISP.
There's not very many areas, but we still see quite a few. There are some older folks though that CAN get other connectivity but choose to remain on dialup. Go figure. Its nothing like it was in the heyday.
Yahoo Directory is a cash cow. $300 per year per listing... come on! It's insane to give that up. And, how much manpower did it require to keep it running and maintain it? Very bad business decision, imo.
Maybe that was the problem. Paying 50 people to do the work of one person does not make good business sense.
Yes, I don't think they needed a 50+ man team to manage Yahoo Directory. I don't know how much they were getting paid, but if they shut it down because they were losing money, then it would've been an easy fix. Keep 5 editors on the directory and move the rest to other dept's. Problem solved.
Yahoo directory was practically worthless anyways, Beside as soon I signed up one of my websites (a few years ago) I lost all my Yahoo search engine rankings. They must have thought if he has enough money to buy a directory listing he has enough money to buy paid advertising
It doesn't work everywhere in the U.S. either. I was able to connect to it a couple of days ago, but otherwise have been unable to since before they announced.
