Yahoo directory, business.com, bestoftheweb - worth the money?

    Hi,

I'm very new to SEO and building my website's PR etc. and would appreciate some expertise from the experts out there!

I read an article somewhere advising that listing your website in these 3 directories pays off in terms of pagerank etc. Is it necessary to come up as google #1 or bing #1? Could anyone advise if that's true?

It's obviously a lot of money (around $1k for all 3) so I was wondering if the money would be put to better use by an SEO program / expert.

    Thanks for your input!

It may be worth it, but only if you can get a category that is not too deep, and was indexed within the last 30 - 60 days.

I find business.com to be the best one out of the three because Yahoo.com has a tendency to bury your listing on the second page of the category, while best of the web likes to add your site into some very deep category that may not even be indexed!

So far, I have had the best experience with Business.com where I list my own directories. I tried Yahoo, and they put my listing on the "next" page of the category. BOTW was plain rude and unresponsive to me, they buried my listing in a category that was not even indexed!

I would recommend that you try to list your company in reasonably priced and topically related niche directories first. That is what I usually do with my sites, and I have had much success in terms of ranking with it.

As a matter of fact, when I was promoting my own site, I decided to make three directories to cover Home Improvement, Home and Garden, and Building / Construction Industries.

I figured that it would help many webmasters like myself to get a relevant placement and actually have their listing end up on the page that is indexed in Google! It was also my desire to help other webmasters like myself find Home and Garden related and reasonably priced niche directories and help them rank better.

I realize that your site maybe in a different niche, but I am going to post Home and Garden directories below to provide an example of what, in my opinion, reasonably priced niche directories should be like. I recommend that try to find some quality / unique content directories that are related to your niche, and are reasonable in terms of pricing.

My own Home Improvement Directories are posted below:

They are all hosted on different servers, and Listed in a relevant category of Business.com directory for better relevance, and as a sort of a seal of quality.

These are really not bad directories, the best paid directories.
But if your budget is limited to $1000 - this isn't the best thing you can do for SEO of your site.

I would say they are worth the money, but I would first start out with other methods of SEO, you may find that you can get rather well known without submitting your site to Yahoo Directory or Best of the Web straight away :)

If you are only looking for PR (Page Rank) - then I would not advise you to get listed in them - because, most probably your site will get listed in deep-deep categories.

On the other hand, if you have a long term strategy and want to build a strong site with solid backlinks from authority sites - then go for it. They are truly authority directories.
But don't expects only these 3 links will serve you -- you will have to build links from different sources from your niche - to diversify your links profile.

I have been hearing a lot of people complaining about getting nothing from Yahoo dir.

Personally if I had 1k I would find a lot better links to buy then 3dir links.

Why pay for a Business.com listing when they're planning on closing down? Probably one to avoid if they haven't disabled the submission form. They were just offering a discount in October as well. Glad I didn't take advantage of it. ;)

Yeah, interesting.. Personally i would never pay $299 a year to be in a directory but a lot of my competitors have Business.com links, so sad.

$299 ($25 per month) is so cheap for a quality link. You may also try textlinkads.com.

I was thinking of advertising with Yahoo, but reading these posts if they bury your site deep in their categories, sounds like I should spend my money on a better alternative?

Directory listings are authoritative not because their backlinks or internal link structure. This is same for all directories including DMOZ. Directories share the authority gained by their editorial quality. Yahoo is a high quality directory since they are selective and this also explains why the price is not so high.
