how strict is the control of the sites for the paid inclusion? example: even if you are not the smartest guy in town you can understand that my site a way to promote affiliate products. should i try anyway or will i just trash the non refundable fee?
wow, this is old and for the record, no, you cannot be listed for free anymore. There's a statement on their site about it.

FYI: try yahoo directory service provide by top10optimizer.com and yahoodirectorylisting.com, they only charge $166/year for yahoo directory standard listing. and they are not scam service, i have a couple site listed by this service. they show the progress in their forum.top10optimizer.com forum.top10optimizer.com.
