Yahoo answers punishing our traffic

Discussion in 'Yahoo' started by thevht, Feb 29, 2008.

For awhile I made a habit of answering Yahoo! Answers and linking to relevant pages on my website. My answers were always on point and contributing to the discussion and even being rated as the "Top Answer".

After a few weeks of this my Yahoo! Answer account was temporarily disabled and our traffic from Yahoo! Search dropped by about 75%!

I contacted Yahoo! and they redirected my complaint and then never replied.

The timing was too perfect to be a coincidence. I didn't link to anything inappropriate so I really don't understand why they punished our ranking.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice on how to get our traffic/ranking back from Yahoo! Search?

    Thanks,

    thevht

Wow, that's big news. I've never heard of it happening before though. I'm going to cross my fingers that this is a coincidence.

That's correct. Please provide link to the answers with related sites. Suppose if you answer a question with niche related to health but the link quoted was from celebrity niche etc...That would definitely look like a spam. The lesson learned? Always choose the niche based on the site content to answer a question. Regarding traffic from yahoo answers... I have mixed opinion and feel that the energy utilized in answering yahoo questions can be productively utilized somewhere else.

I do not think that YAHOO! has any valid reason to drop your traffic from their search engine if you were being helpful in the answers community. Just hope they changed some results around and did not lower you on purpose.

I answer reasonable diverse questions but focus mainly on a few niches. One account only and been good so far. Coincidently enough, I was just going through my stats for the last 2 days and man Yahoo Answers traffic is sweet. Can understand the pain should one lose that traffic.

Yahoo is manual, its has a huge team set up which just checks photos everyday, another which just checks news sites being listed.... another just on yahoo to spot spam and shit...

u must have pressed one of them.. and they can push the manual button.. like most of their thins.. yahoo = manual

if you had tons of links then yahoo would have considered it spamming.

    Thanks for the helpful replies.

I'm still petrified with fear and wont return to answering questions until I know the guidelines better.

Be warned. I answered questions accurately and linked to content relevant sources(from my site). Just be careful and never spam.

    Thanks again,

So it's not ok to overtly link your site with the answers?

I know of many people who had their accounts disabled on yahoo answers because of spamming.. it doesn't matter to them how relevant your links are.. just don't do it..
