Their concern was whether they would be require to be the "World's Police " for the many pornograpy laws versus free speech consideration conflicts
This is too bad IMO. The xxx TLD would have been a good move for the Internet I think. I don't think adult sites should have been forced to move over to this TLD, but I do think it would have had some positive uses.
They're just covering their own arses: a) I don't think anyone was ever saying that porn sites would be forced to use .xxx. If they weren't going to be forced to use it, then why would anyone have to police it? b) Even if they were 'supposed' to be forced to use it, I think we can see that they wouldn't have been. When was the last time that you were asked for proof of an organisation when registering a .org, or proof of internet / networking applicability when registering a .net? Pathetic.
I am very disappointed. I think it would have been a good move. Have they given up on the whole idea, or intending to have a different .tld for it? At least it shows that they aren't working solely for the profit, as some have suggested with names like .mobi as .xxx would have made them a fortune.
NEW YORK (AP) -- Faced with opposition from conservative groups and some pornography Web sites, the Internet's key oversight agency voted Wednesday to reject a proposal to create a red-light district on the Internet. http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/internet/05/11/xxx.domain.ap/index.html
I think its a wrong decision. Its a farce to say that it would create a red light district on the internet, have these people seen the internet!
