XP service pack 3 and the automatic updates problem

There is a problem with service pack 3 and automatic updates. If service pack 3 for XP is installed, on some machines the automatic updates install script will stop working.

The updates are downloaded, but when updates are installed, only and error message will be returned. Nor will the updates be installed at the time set by the system administrator. Each update will have to be downloaded by a web browser and installed one at a time.

Nothing is written to the event logs as to why the updates can not be installed. It's as if the updates installer just stopped working.

How, and why this problem is happening, I can not find out. I just updated a computer here at the office and now it can not install updates either. If anyone finds a fix for this, let me know.

So far, a variety of things have been tried to resolve the problem. Including installing the latest updater from microsoft. But if you have service pack 3 installed, that results in an error message that a better updater is already installed.

    I don't upgrade XP after i got SP2

    update is useless
i don't even bother to install any anti-virus and spyware software
they don't work at all especially the spyware software.
once you get a spyware, it will stay there no matter if you deleted your spyware from your computer or not
I just reinstall the entire system if i encountered problem like spyware or virus attack :)

anyway, what is difference between SP3 and SP2, what are the new features?

Just go to C:\Windows\System32 and find and register Wups2.dll.

To do that, right click on it and select 'Open With' then 'Choose Program' and find C:\Windows\System32\Regsvr32.

If you choose to 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' then all you will have to do is double click on any .dll to register it.

Once you have registered Wups2.dll your problem will disappear.

The easy way to register Wups2.dll file is to use the start/run option and type this in regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wups2.dll There should be a popup saying the file was successfully registered.

Before I posted this thread I did register the Wups2.dll file and it did not fix the problem. Service pack 3 has been uninstalled on the workstation, but automatic updates wants to install it again. I am going to set up a test station and see if I can duplicate the results from the first computer. The employee needed their work station back, so SP3 was removed and the machine was given back to her.

I never install service packs until they get all the bugs out. It took a year for SP2. I'm watching this one carefully, and when everyone says they have no problems any longer, I'll get it.

Deploying Service Pack 3 directly on top of a fresh installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 will kill all subsequent updates from Microsoft’s servers. The Redmond giant warned that integrating SP3 into the operating system straight after performing a new installation of XP SP2 via Windows Update will result in the failed implementation of any additional releases from Windows Update, Microsoft Update or through Automatic Updates. In this context, installing the third and last service pack for Windows XP onto a freshly-deployed copy of XP SP2 will virtually cut off the operating system from the life-line represented by the company’s updates, served either through WU, MU or AU.

“This problem occurs when the latest Windows Update client has been installed and then you install Windows XP SP3 before restarting the computer. This causes the new Wups2.dll file not to be enabled (registered). When Windows XP SP3 is installed, it does not detect the Wups2.dll file, and it sets the registry to point to the original Wups.dll file version that is included in Windows XP SP2 and Windows XP SP3. Because the registry files that correspond to the Wups2.dll file are missing, update installations are unsuccessful,” Microsoft indicated.
Whilst the roll out of Windows XP Service Pack 3 has gone reasonably smoothly some problems have been reported. One of the first to emerge is a persistent reboot that affects some HP machines using AMD processors. Both HP and Microsoft are aware of the problems but neither has announced a patch yet, however, several fixes have been developed including this one on Jespers’s Blog. A second, potentially more serious problem concerns a conflict with several Norton products, which can results in a PC’s Registry being filled with corrupt entries.
