XP is good for both interface and perfomance. Vista looks great in Graphical interface, but in perfomance its very low.....

It might be on a low-end computer, but it's more stable than XP, and all the tests showed that.

This Vista v XP argument is going to drag on, well up until XP becomes obsolete.

Vista has most of the problems associated with it (the majority of these were due to driver issues) sorted out, but it is still a much more resource hungry OS than XP.

There is no doubt, if you run XP on a PC as opposed to Vista, then the XP will out perform it in the majority of tests.

That said, if you are looking a t a new PC, and it is properly spec'd, then there is no reason not to have Vista on it. Vista will run fine, if your machine is geared up for it.

Laptops are another matter entirely, as they tend to be that bit slower than desktops, and there are always performance shortcuts made to keep their price down to the level that most people expect them to be nowadays. The propblem with new laptops are that some of the manufacturers are providing Vista as standard, with no 'upgrade' or 'downgrade' path to XP, and some will not even have the XP drivers available for download (as we found out lately with one client PC).

So, in summary - we would not recommend that people look to put Vista onto their existing PC's - but give it some serious consideration when purchasing a new one. We still get a large percentage of our customers requesting XP over Vista, but this will change as time passes.

You can turn off some of the visual features of Vista, and this will speed it up considerably (Aero interface, etc). A quick google will get you a load of tips.

nice post...can't address all of what you said but the part about being resource hungry just boggles my mind. I want something faster, sleeker, safer.

it's like if I was to go shopping for a car...I need it to look awesome but I'm wiling for it to have less power, less mpg, less cargo & passenger space...makes no sense to me.

Ah, but you are generally happy to swap your racey car for a much safer, secure family car are you not?

Vista is more secure, it has loads of little features which are generally useful. It looks awesome, and it does make a lot of routine tasks very easy.

Once it is in circulation, and the majority of our applications are written to make best use of it - it will be a sleeker beast.

Unfortunately it is resource-hungry, but only when compared to XP. Lets face it, XP didn't run too well on our old Win98 PC's either :)

I stand by my original point - a new PC go for Vista, existing ones leave at XP.

no! as a matter of fact I'm **not b/c I had to do that in real life!!

funny people keep mentioning it looks great. I could give 2 rat's asses about looks. In fact, I have all the XP fancy graphics turned off to increase performance.

BUT you have intrigued me somewhat on the little nuances...like did they get rid of the annoyances...like when you go to move as file and it says it's in use by another program or I don't have the necessary privileges.....XP is not with it's worts that's for sure.

No comparison, Vista hands down is much better! Very powerful if used to its full capability but you must have a newer system in order to enjoy. Using an older system, the user experience is degraded. For best results you need a quad core cpu 3.0.
