Vista came out after XP, Vista has a lot of visual improvements comparing to XP.
But, Vista does not include everything XP pro has, for ex. faxing software.
Xp has a lot of patches to improve looking and still supported for updates.
Why do you need to pay more ? Even you would get less functioning software
    unless you purchase Vista Ultimate.

I'm still using XP and my vote goes to it.

But I'm going to buy Vista Ultimate in a couple of days and try it for the 1st time and see how it goes. :D

XP is more customizable than any other OS so my vote goes for it.

True, Vista is not that bad. But is not good enough yet to make me wan’t to upgrade.
Speed is King for me, and my XP is faster.

When I initially came on Vista 5 months back, i was like "What the hell". Then I got my computer upgraded, got myself a core 2 Quad processor, 4 GB or RAM, and a 512 Nvidia 9800 GT Card. Installed Vista 64 bit onto it, and now I must say , it's Wow! Definitely faster than XP, fewer bugs after SP1, and easier to set up as in networking and all. So, conclusion is, if you got hardware to support it, go for Vista, else stick with XP.

Four months ago, I would have said XP, no contest. On my machines and those of my clients even SP1 fixed little if any of the issues I was having in terms of stability - my own workstation attempting to run Vista being so unstable I was lucky if I could keep it running for more than 20 minutes at a time - which is why I kept going back to XP x64. Usually when I reported my problems in threads like this one you'd get some jackass saying "Well only people with older machines have these sorts of problems" - Serious STFU territory when the workstation in question is a 680i mainboard, Q6600 CPU, 8 gigs of RAM, two Ge8 series video cards (NOT in SLI, driving three monitors).

All this changed back in late august. In july Microsoft had released numbers of error reports and their likely causes - MOST of which pointed NOT to Vista, but to shoddy drivers from the hardware manufacturers. The worst offender? nVidia, though Intel, Creative and ATI shared a good deal of blame. Given my configuration is a nForce chipset mainboard, ge8800 Video and a creative sound card, I was triple-damned.

AFTER that information was released the hardware makers could no longer point their fingers back at M$, and FINALLY got off their asses and fixed most of their drivers. I've been running Vista Ultimate x64 since august without a problem thanks to the driver base FINALLY being mature. Between SP1 and the new drivers Vista has become not only as stable as XP x64, but FASTER as well.

Thankfully I always keep a spare drive handy for OS testing, on the principle you don't have the right to badmouth anything you haven't tried. Every time there's been a major update since the release, I tried it (Just as I try every major release of OS X, Debian stable, Ubuntu, Suse and Fedora). They finally got it right and now Vista is my primary OS.
