XP keeps turning off

I purchased a HP computer (12 months ago) it came with preinstalled Windows XP on it.
It keeps turning itself off, then it restarts again.
I have downloaded Windows Defender to "try" to fix the problem, but,Windows Defender tells me that the computer is working correctly.

Can some please advise me on how to rectify this matter

Looks like definitely a virus to me. Did you try booting in safe mode ?
or 'Last known good configuration settings' ?

Might not be a virus. XP reboots on errors to prevent damage. Forgot how to but you can turn it off somehow although that may not be such a good idea. It may be a hardware issue.

got be hardware :) I once did an update my creative driver through MS update and tat make me unable to hear anything and when I uninstall it, that make my system to protest and reboots when I use the pc for a few hours.

Though boot up in safe mode and reinstall the old driver and everything back to normal

I had that happen to me a couple of months ago. HAd to have a friend come over and fix it. not sure what the problem was - something in the start up menu I think (those evil hidden start programs). so it was an easy fix- just not for me! lol

I had a Dell laptop that would reboot when doing intensive tasks. I find out two years later than Dell had made a mistake when manufacturing it that fan wasn't sufficient to keep it cool of something like that.

    Maybe yours is overheating.

If youve recently installed any windows updates, try removing them, theres been some right strange ones recently.

Im guessing that a few updates had a bug.

I've have a computer that is currently rebooting the moment it connects to the internet. I can boot up disconnected, but when I plug in the network cable, it connects to the internet and instantly reboots.

If this is what you are experiencing, I've heard it could be a trojan spyware/virus on your computer and a good spyware/adware removal program could solve it.

Many thanks to those replied to my question.

I am running AVG professional updated every day
The computer decides to turn itself off & then back on again at random

I have spent the last 2 days going through all my downloads & cannot see any thing that has been downloaded with EXE;have also reinstalled windows from the pre-installed hold in "D: drive
I have ,have also gone back to another date to a the repair wizard;the problem still exists.I am now starting to wonder if what was said in this forum maybe correct :-ei:- the fan not being big enough ???????????

I also have a friend who purchased a new computer last Thursday with Vista pre-installed,the same thing is happening with it,it has Windows Defender already loaded as well

    Again thanks to all

Can you go into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer >

Select System and it will show a log of all system events, you should be able to see what could be causing the reboots they normally have an yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. Or even a red circle with an x inside.

Double click on a couple of those entries click on the 2 pages icon below the up and down arrows, paste them into notepad then copy and paste them so we can see the errors.

I might not be able to help you with the problem, but others maybe able to with the information you've pasted.

Try running the disk defragmenter tool once before you go with the format or something...
    Bye :)

Maybe it is due to overheating. I have this problem once and I removed the side panel and place a small fan near there and it solved my problem.

I had this problem once and it was due to bad RAM.
The crashing was particularly bad when I watched media files or made sudden mouse moves.
It took a while before I realised I had replaced some RAM shortly before these problems began.
    New RAM = Problem solved.
    In my case anyway.
