I have been using the JCrawler component for a while and it works pretty well. Another option is XMap, but I found it to not be as good. http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/structure-a-navigation/site-map/5386
An external sitemap generator should work fine with Joomla sites. You usually get more features with an external generator.
I have found though that some Joomla throttle sitemmap crawler if you hit the sites too hard. Not sure if it's a module or default behavior in Joomla
