XHTML / CSS valid - good for SEO?

I wonder if it is good for SEO to have my website CSS and XHTML valid? Can this be an advantage in search engine ranking positions? E.g. can this help me to get at least 1 place higher?

A good structure can definitely help, although i don't think search engines specifically take into account if the site is valid or not.

I can give a 100% guarantee that it doesn't hurt. So why not bother and make it valid? If anytime in the future some algorithms will change, and valid sites will get an advantage, why not do it?

P.S. being valid also improves usability and compatibility. So I think it is worth investing time in.

Good point, thanks. OK, so I will make it valid, but there is no hurry.

Despite what I put earlier there are many other reasons to make your site valid. Professionalism is one!

On the other hand, most clients will not care, so why take the time in making them valid?

I think it does help you to get a better place in the ranking. Google just loves css, xhtml tableless pages. They are easy to manage and to. A site which I coded a couple months ago jumped to first page because of clean-code.

It will help but not my much. If you go to some big sites with great rankings out there, many of them are not valid though...

I would go with HTML 4.0 over XHTML, but I doubt Google really cares.

Can you give any reasons for that?

SE doesn't care at all. try to search for competitive keyword (e.g Hotel, credit card) in Google and evaluate the top 10 website if they are HTML or CSS valid.you will know the answer.
