Intiallay when building back links google had indexed the site in the search result as www.url.com . Then a couple months ago i noticed the search result just displaying url.com, so I pointed all my links at http://url.com / Now this morning it has the www infornt of it again....?

    Question Why is this happening?

And, should I re-point all my past links to the www.url.com now?

    Thanks!

I think you should not be in hurry. Wait for some days and then decide how google is behaving.

Add your site in webmaster tools and you can tell google which you would like it to show, with WWW or without... plus loads of other good stuff.

It's too late to add it. Its on the first page for about 40 different keywords. And it's ranking alot better for some reason in conjunction with the www displaying. Pointing back links to http:// doesn't have any weight if the site is being displayed as www. correct?

NO, there is nothing to be late.... IF you are still taking time to join webmasters and add your site, then you are late. Simply Set in the webmasters, how you need it. It may be affecting your backlinks and serps if you allow them to dance.

    Thanks

Not too late, as previous poster says. Also, you can add 301 redirect with .htaccess to point to WWW and ensure that no link juice is lost.

No that is not correct. Your site answers requests to either http:// or http://www or www. Regardless of which version of the URL that Google displays in search results, a sercher clicking the link will be transferred to your site. Most websites wind up having some links pointing to http://www and some to http://. The issue relates to PR. If backlinks are split between the two versions, the PR gets split too.

By registering with Google's webmastertools you can tell G which version of the URL you prefer. Theoretically, that version will then be bookmarked and linked to more often and therefore you should wind up with higher PR.
