I'm getting a new domain... let's say I'd like to have some domain in the domain. Should I go with www.some-domain.com or www.somedomain.net if www.somedomain.com is taken? Any opinions?
somedomain.com It's more common then .net and doesn't have a hyphen. With the hyphen people may forget and type in somedomain.com. Don't worry about keywords being seperated in the domain, if that is the case, because google doesn't really take those into account so much anymore. Skinny
i would go with 1. somedomain.com 2. somedomain.net 3. some-domain.com hyphenated domains are difficult to brand. its much easier to say "your keyword domain dot net" than "your hyphen keyword hyphen domain dot com" or much less... to try to explain to someone what a hyphen is. you'd be surprised how many people don't know.
I would get a unique domain. Dont buy one someones already got . If you do, make sure they dont have their domain trademarked, because you could get into some serious headaches.
Can't pick somedomain.com since it's taken already They do or they don't. It can't be anywhere in the middle Exactly what I'm thinking. The .com is only parked. No site there. Anyway, thanks guys for your replies. My host admin just went home so I've got some time to think about it.
if you beleive your site is gonna have much success, you might protect your brand and also buy the same site, ending with "s" (plural). Of course, this is not applicable for any site, but for some it is highly recommended. I did this a couple of times, cause I think it worths the money (for example: coredownload and coredownloads, both COMs)
Yea, that's a good idea, thanks. But I'll rather wait and see if it'll get enough attention before buying other domains for one site.
NO HYPHEN no body types hyphen domains I realised this the hard way when I bought a domain with 3 hyphens.
I've worked in the technical support industry for the past 10 years, and 50% of your end users don't know where a 'dash' is on the keyboard and 35% don't know what a 'hyphen' is. They'll try it over and over and over without the dash and get the other person's homepage. Exactly the opposite of your intention. My second domain name included one dash, and while I didn't actually try to use it for anything other than email, try getting a relative to send you an email when there's a dash in it and you'll understand the frustrating experience of owning a domain name with a hyphen. As evidence of my suggestion on this, three word domain names are easier to remember than a two word domain name with a hyphen. The word 'dash' or 'hyphen' or even 'minus' inserted between your perfectly good two words breaks the flow and disrupts understanding of the relationship between your two keywords that ARE in the domain name.
I would go with... somedomain.com some-domain.com some-domain.net Everyone knows the .com is the big boy of the internet!
I would stay away from hyphenated domain names. Just think about it, if google really wanted to clean their database they should remove all domains that have more than one hyphen.
I think it all depends on the poster's intent with the name. Yes, non-hypenated names are a lot more brandable, but IMO, names with one hyphen generally do well if they are the exact keywords the person is looking for. Search MSN for financial articles. #2 has the hyphenated version of the domain.
Eek hypens ruin domains so much. I can't belive people still use them Go for the .net It can't be that bad!
I always suggest to stay away from domain names with hyphens in them, at least for main URL’s. If you are really going to push a domain, try to get the .net and .com with and without hyphens.
If you want your user to type the url than repeat this with me three times... NO Hyphens NO Hyphens NO Hyphens
