I was told that there is a setting in Google Webmaster tools where you can have Google view a site with and without www the same. Does anyone know if this is true and where it is in tools?
I would like to know this as well. I'm always concerned about www/non so I added a 301 in my htaccess, but it would be nice to know if this exists.
You can set that in the preferred domain settings (Tools -> Preferred domain). More details are at: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=44231&hl=en
preferred domain settings (Tools -> Preferred domain). But remember to 301 domain.com to www.domain.com
Yes, it is True In webmaster tools, click on TOOLS, then PREFERRED DOMAIN. Here you can change the setting for www
what google does is that, it just changes non www domain reference found during the searching to www. it does not automatically make your domain to use www. for that you need to use 301 directive. you can find more about that if u google www htaccess.
