Vision www.secondhandbooks.us to become the largest site for used books in the US The Story I manage the site www.secondhandbooks.us that I started a few years ago.I just wanted to offer a venue for people to list and sell their books, similar to craigslist but better looking and only for books/CDs/DVDs. Then kijiji came along (better looking but still not only for books and moreover plastered with ads).However, difficult to compete with these long-established sites. And a few months ago I had a 'revelation', why not enhance the functionality of the site so booksellers can use it too.I did some 'research' and established sites charge commissions and fees (sometimes quite high) so why not offer something similar but for free (I mean similar because secondhandbooks.us would not offer payment processing). I'd like to keep the site for individuals who list their own books and brick and mortar bookstores. The buyer would search for a used book, see that a bookstore in his city has it, drive there and pick it up or have the seller ship the book if the bookstore is from other city far away. This is how I envisage the role of the site, it is for people who sell directly.However, even if it is free - and very simple to use - bookstores are reluctant to register and upload their books. How will it make money ?Through (very non-invasive) ads in the 2nd year of the site's existence.
