    It depends on the word itself and the purpose of the site. Sometimes it is much better to have a different website and sometime not.

    I know that... I mean if you're trying to Search Engine Optimize for the word "keyword", with everything else the same, which would the search engine list first?
    www.keyword.com or www.somethingelse.com/keyword/

    Its impossible to say. There are too many external factors involved.

    All things being equal I expect keyword.com would be ranked higher.

    Having keywords in your URL is pretty good stuff. I've begun experimenting with this a few months ago, and I'm now a believer in keyword stuffing your domain, even if you have to use those hideous hyphens.

    It will be better to use keyword.com, instead of a subdirectory.
    that way you work your SEO on your domain, instead of your directories
