Is it going to be worth anything in a few years? Could easily use it for setting up a memorial fund etc

I think you have to renew the domain for many years before it could get any value.

Yes unfortunately money make the world go around. I would actually like the sell the domain so that it can be used to setup a charity fund or something.

I have £15k+ of university debts to pay off.

    I also own:

    InMemoryOfDavidBeckham.com
    InMemoryOfCliffRichard.com
    InMemoryOfBillGates.com

The media make sh*t loads of money off 'big news' good or bad. This is exactly the same unfortunately. In business you have to make choices and this is mine. I understand if some people don't like it but people have done far worse things.

I don't see how you will make any money off of them. Their main sites and major news agencies will get the bulk of the traffic for a few days, and then the news cycle will be over and on to the next story.

Long term traffic will probably go to an official site that is promoted and supported by the estate, who will probably sue you for them anyway for looking to capitalize on their deaths.

Without building a site on it with lots of accurate information, I don't see anyone buying them just to hold on to them. If they are not in position SEO wise, then what is the point, but you can't promote them while the people are still alive, that is just morbid and will probably make the subject sue you for possession anyway.

You could build fan sites or informational sites, but i wouldn't load them up with adsense or affiliate links so what's the point ?

    Just being honest.

No it's not the same. Media outlets are constant reliable sources of news and information everyday of the week , all year long..., not just opportunists when one particular person dies.
    They make money on credibility.

I won't comment about the ethical part of the problem, but only about business.

In your domain name, please replace "madonna" with "elvispresley", "johnlennon", "freddymercury" or any other dead celebrity. Are these domains valuable for you?

    - In the best case, you have to spend $xxx on a single domain renewal to sell it for low $xx after many years.
    - In the worst case, you may die before Madonna dies

    Good luck!

Yeah man, that's just bad Karma waiting to profit from someones death. Haven't you ever seen any Twilight Zone episodes ?

People investing in the death of others, always meet a terrible fate.
    Bad Karma man:(

Considering Madonna has TM'ed her name, like all of those other celebrities, it is an infringement waiting to happen if you ever attempt to associate it with that celebrity.
