I have found this result on a doman. What is the extra "/." on the url all about?

    Anyone know?

It will point to the top level page for the site - i.e. index.html or index.htm or index.asp or whatever index file you have configured ;)

Browsers see the "/" as "this is the directory I want to be in" - and in fact I believe that this can reduce the number of requests to a server when trying to resolve a domain.

Looks like the "." does... well... nothing ;)

But why would the . (dot) show? This file does not exist?

I saw it when using Web Position Gold 3.
