This might be the most stupid question I have ever posted on a forum such as this however I am still relatively new to world of SEO so here goes. I am having a wordpress blog developed for my site and currently plan to simply host the blog on my company domain with a similar design and name. Are there any reasons from an SEO point of view or other why I would want to host the blog on its own domain and call it something totally different? I can't think of any but I can think of a number of comps that have their blogs set up in this way so I am thinking I must be missing something? S
If the blog is designed to assist in marketing the company, then I'd put it on a sub-folder. Probably the only reason to host it on a unique domain would be if you plan to target a specific phrase or product. Or, if you are planning on using the blog as a back link to your main site in time? If not, I'd leave it on the company site as it will get indexed and listed much quicker on a sub-folder versus a brand new domain.
Putting the blog in a sub-folder or sub-domain would let you capitalize on the trust that your domain has built up. You'll also avoid getting put in the sandbox and it should help increase the overall strength of your site. If you put it on a new domain, you'll essentially be starting from scratch. Now if you're trying to use your new blog to rank your current site for your targeted keywords, then it might be worth putting the blog on a new domain.
Definitely keep it on the same domain. Preferably using the yourdomain.com/forum structure. This allows you to utilize the PR and link juice already created by your main domain. Link to your forum from within each page on your main domain and you will be set in terms of SEO.
I highly suggest putting the blog in a subfolder on your main domain. This way you can increase your own sites page rank through submitting the blog to directories, utilizing social bookmarking sites for each blog entry, etc. Subfolder... You can dooooo it.
Thanks guys. I had thought as much I was just unclear as to why I see so many blogs associated with other sites that site on there on domain. I am sticking in on the same domain.
