www and non-www

Few days ago when I was getting my site analyzed by a tool, it told me the www site got more then 23k links and to my surprise the non-www has more then 19k links. Thats something I wouldn't want for sure, so I took care of that.

Wondering if any fellow webmasters seen any improvement on PR or SERP by taking care of this problem.

i made my without www redirect to www. from the start .. probably in ur case the search engines don't have to do double the work now.

Search engines considers .. www.yourdomain.com and yourdomain.com as 2 diff websites ... so better redirect www to non-www or non-www to www. You have to redirect one of them to other so as to have a same PR.
You can have a look at the below article:
    SEO Redirect or 301 Redirect
This might be helpful for you :)

Yeah, redirecting can help you out. Also if you have submitted your site to google's webmaster control, you'll find an option on with or without 'www'. But anyways just a redirect works fine.

I am not very sure about this.......... but I think we should make our site redirected to either with "www" or "without www"..I have redirected my site to www using Wordpress unbuilt feature.

Apparently changing preferred domain on Google webmaster tool does not prevent pages indexed for www and non-www. I have added the site, and preferred domain on G webmaster tool long time ago; I have put the www.domainname.com. Now yesterday when I check the links for www and non-www, I see the non-www got huge number of links.

Well, glad I am late then never fixing it. Also stopped the hotlinking, domain masking. Hopefully these all will help stop leaking PR, and SERP rankings. After all I could care less of PR, like to get better ranking on SERPs for sure.

before 2 months ago, one of my website was not having any back links without www, but when i write the same with www , it shows me 12 back links,
Your website needs redirection as the method of counting back links as per with www URL, not with out it.
